On March 18, Mrs. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, the fifth Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR, visited Guizhou University (GZU), where she delivered a keynote speech and engaged in discussions with faculty and students. Attendees included Liu Rui, Deputy Head of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Guizhou Provincial Committee; Bai Zhen, Deputy Director of the Provincial Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office; GZU leaders Yang Wei, Song Baoan, Zhang Jie, Wang Jinrong, and Chen Yanbo; as well as officials, student and faculty representatives, and around 360 guests from the Hong Kong Chinese Education and Culture Exchange Foundation.

In her welcome remarks, GZU Party Committee Secretary Yang Wei expressed gratitude for the visit, highlighting GZU’s history, current profile, and partnerships with Hong Kong. She voiced hopes for deeper collaboration in education, research, and culture, and called for greater resource sharing, innovation, and joint talent development to support high-quality development in higher education across Guizhou and the Greater Bay Area.

Mrs. Lam’s keynote, titled “Upholding and Improving the Practice of ‘One Country, Two Systems’ in Hong Kong,” covered six areas: its historical background, constitutional framework, role of the Chief Executive, ongoing implementation, new developments, and efforts to attract global talent. She outlined four principles for its continued success: upholding “One Country” while utilizing “Two Systems,” ensuring security and development, leveraging Hong Kong’s advantages, and promoting inclusiveness and harmony.

After the speech, Mrs. Lam held in-depth discussions with faculty and students on youth development, academic exchange, technological innovation, regional cooperation, and the Greater Bay Area. She emphasized building a diversified economy to expand youth employment and encouraged universities to foster interdisciplinary innovation and global perspectives.

To conclude the event, Yang Wei and Hong Kong student representatives presented Mrs. Lam with flowers and souvenirs. The visit ended with a tour of GZU’s Science and Technology Park, History Museum, and Chinese Culture Academy.
